Overview

Being able to communicate is a key part of working with others and being productive. Stakeholders at this fintech company found that the engineers found that some engineers were lacking the communication skills needed to produce effective results on their teams. A communication skills programme was developed to support the engineering team in developing their communication. Listening was one of the core communication skills needed so a course that enabled them to practice listening techniques and apply them was essential to the team’s development.

Process

Brainstorming: I worked with an SME to identify the key areas of communication that needed reinforcing within the engineering team. Management was keen to ensure that the engineers received a thorough training programme. We worked together to identify the core elements of communication the team needed in order to produce better results. I conducted research on the different strands of communication and began to dissect the core skills needed to improve communication. And began noting examples of tasks and the learners could do to practice their skills. Here is the brainstorm for the listening strand of the communications programme.

Storyboard/Script
As part of the storyboard/script, it was important to keep the company’s branding in mind. The company’s brand was to remain approachable, optimistic, simple and trail-blazing. The aim was to create a script that used casual conversational language so that the computing engineers were able to see a good understanding of how to communicate to engage and feel immersed in the course from the start.

Prototype
I mapped out the slides, media, visuals, audio, text, and programming details for each screen using a text-based storyboard. As part of the storyboard/script, it was important to incorporate ideas of how the course could remain interactive whilst sharing information. The course included hover and click to reveal engagement along with drag and drop, multiple response and free text questions.

Development
In Articulate Storyline, I pieced together the visual and audio assets, built interactions and tested the project to bring the final product together.
